Luz H. Coronado Our precious wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and the light of our lives, Luz H. Coronado, returned home to God on November 1 st , All Saints Day—a day befitting who she was and remains: our saint. As a devoted mother, wife, artist, teacher, cook, singer, humanitarian, and so much more, there was no life Luz touched that she didn’t make better. She was 76 years old at the time of her passing, and is survived by her husband Clemente Coronado Sr., her two sons Clemente Coronado Jr., and Antonio Coronado. She was the center of our family, where she made an immense impact. Her legacy continues on not only with us but with anyone who spent even a few seconds with her: The children she taught at the center, the patrons she helped at the library, those whose ballots she helped cast on election day, anyone she served a meal to, right down to the grocer at the supermarket who she greeted with a smile. Born in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico on March 4 th , 1948, Luz was one of seven children, in the family of Eugene and Antonia Hernandez. With a humble upbringing on a tropical island, the world was blessed with Luz—a warm child full of life. Like many Puerto Rican families, she shared a close bond with her siblings—six sisters and one brother—who helped shape her into a woman who valued her family and culture. At fourteen Luz moved with her family to New York, where she spent her formative years during the 1960s, a time of great change in the country. This is where she would later meet her husband. She met Clemente Coronado one night in a dance hall in Manhattan, New York. Little did she know they would spend the next 48 years together, bringing two children into the world and spending most of their lives in California. In her life, Luz wore many hats and was a creator by nature. She loved to write, paint, dance, sing, cook, but most of all she loved her family, and creating a warm and wonderful home for them. She was a great role model for her children, her nieces and nephews, and the children she taught, bringing that same warmth into every life she touched. Some of the words that best capture Luz can be found in the Bible, in Proverbs 31:10-31, The Wife of Noble Character. As the proverb states she was a strong woman not only in body, but in spirit, mind and character. She proved this strength many times in her life, demonstrating an ability to see past fear and find love in every moment. Also known for her kind and peaceful nature, she possessed the sweetness and serenity of an angel. This is who we’ve cherished and loved for so long, who we continue to love and keep in our hearts. Our mother, wife, sister, and now our “Guardian Angel”. She will be watching over us now until it is our time to be called and join her.
