Gustavo "Gus" Herrera, Jr. March 22, 1959 – February 14, 2025 Gustavo Herrera, Jr., lovingly known as Gus or Tavo, passed away on February 14, 2025, in La Jolla, California. Born on March 22, 1959, in El Paso, Texas, Gustavo was a man of profound conviction, unwavering faith, and an innate ability to lift the spirits of those around him. Gustavo dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, using his legal career to advocate for the voiceless. He took great pride in his work with Estey and Bomberger, LLP, and the East Los Angeles Women’s Center. He also deeply valued his collaboration with attorneys Rick Freitas and Todd J. Hilts, honoring the meaningful work they accomplished together and the friendships they built along the way. His unwavering commitment to fairness and service made him a true champion for the underdog. Among his cherished possessions is a collection of eagle figurines—symbols of the boundless strength of the human spirit and the power of perseverance. To him, they were more than mere keepsakes; they embodied his vision, soaring high with the hope and determination to make a difference in the world. With a magnificent sense of humor, an adventurous soul, and an extraordinary gift for oratory, Gustavo had a presence that could light up any room. He became a father at a young age, which deepened his reverence for family and taught him to treasure life’s fleeting moments. He found solace and inspiration near the water, where he reflected on the beauty of the world and the glory of God, all while sporting his signature sunglasses. Above all, Gustavo was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, resilience, and insatiable optimism. His courageous spirit and steadfast faith were evident in his parting words: “My faith in the Lord’s infallible promise is confirmed. I am ready.” Gustavo is survived by his beloved wife of forty-five years, Cecilia; his sons, Gustavo III (Viridiana), David Omar (Elizabeth), and Nicholas (Martha); and his four cherished grandchildren, Yuliana Marie, Gustavo IV, Francesca Syvannah, and Anaissa Nicole. He also leaves behind his mother, Cruz T. Brancato; his brothers, Jorge and Victor; and his sisters, Nydia, Minerva, Miriam, and Irene. Along with his immediate family, he is remembered by many treasured extended family members, lifelong friends, and colleagues. Gustavo's legacy of love, faith, and resolute determination, along with his deep devotion to family and friends, will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable ability to uplift those around him was a true reflection of his kindness, faith, and enduring optimism. He is preceded in death by his father, Gustavo, and his brother, Filiberto. Services will be held on March 20, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, located at 450 Corral Canyon Rd., Bonita, CA 91902. A Celebration of Life will follow at Corpus Christi Parish Hall from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
